The Football Conference is clamping down on badly run and financially profligate clubs by tightening its rules over insolvency even further. The Conference has already abolished preferred status for football creditors, which is a rule in the Football League, and it is now considering relegating any club that enters into administration at the end of that season.
Under Football League rules, clubs have to prioritise the payment football-related debts such as salaries and player transfer fees. In many cases other non-football creditors, such as HMRC, have to settle for a tiny proportion of the amount that is owed.
It appears that the Conference is taking a pro-active stance in an attempt to change in the way that non-league football clubs run themselves. Maybe the Conference is becoming the best run league in the country? The result could be that non-league football has an annual shake-up with many clubs moving up and down.
